Rocky Valley - house for a wooded garden

This house was completed in 2005.

The garden site is at the northern foot of the Sugar Loaf and is shaded on the west side by tall beech trees. The house was located to nestle between the trees and to maximize the area of eastern garden that both client and her parents (from the adjoining site) could overlook.

Due to occasional flooding of the site and due to a desire to protect the beech trees, the house was raised on a steel grid resting on small block piles (each adjusted where necessary to avoid roots).

A spacious light-filled design, tall ceilings, the integration of existing trees and the ability to convert the attic into several rooms in the future influenced the design.
